Press release

Solo exhibition by Ai Ohkawara,

“Photomorphogenesis – From Darkness into Light”
Artist Ai Ohkawara will have an exhibition entitled “Photomorphogenesis - From Darkness into Light” at the art gallery in Takashimaya Shinjuku Store (Tokyo), located on the 10th floor, from November 2nd to November 14th, 2016.

In this exhibition, Ohkawara will present a total of fifteen oil paintings and mixed-media works, ten collaged works, and seven three-dimensional works which use a special chemical film.

The exhibition title “photomorphogenesis” refers to a phenomenon where plant growth patterns are influenced by the directional source of light. Attracted and inspired by the beauty of the human skeletal structure and the human body, Ohkawara got the idea that human beings’ spiritual nature is hidden under their skin. Her new works feature unusual materials, including collages of antique-looking pictures which are attached to acrylic board and then painted over. Her three-dimensional works use a special chemical film which offers endless variations when viewed from various angles and differing light intensities.

All living creatures have light and dark sides. By contrasting these two sides, this exhibition will be an experiment that pulls memories from the viewer, even from the deepest psychological levels.
